CHILLERS, AIR HANDLERS,
AND PUMPS NOISE

Mechanical rooms are the operational core of modern commercial, healthcare, and industrial buildings. Chillers, air handlers, pumps, and compressors generate continuous vibration and airflow turbulence that travels beyond the equipment footprint. While enclosures may reduce direct equipment radiation, connected ductwork and piping systems often remain untreated transmission pathways. Effective mechanical room sound attenuation must therefore address both equipment and distribution systems.

When large air handling units discharge into supply ducts, airflow velocity increases significantly. This airflow turbulence causes thin sheet metal duct walls to vibrate, producing HVAC duct breakout noise that radiates into adjacent spaces. Over long duct runs, this radiated energy accumulates and becomes persistent background hum in offices, corridors, and patient rooms. Standard thermal insulation does not provide sufficient airborne sound transmission reduction to resolve this issue.

Hydronic and chilled water piping further contribute to sound transfer. As pumps operate, vibration travels through connected pipes and into structural framing, increasing structure-borne sound transmission. Without proper pipe vibration damping, low-frequency mechanical energy spreads through walls and ceilings, elevating overall ambient sound levels.

DuctaSil® B10Lag1™ Pipe & Duct Barrier System combines a high-mass sound barrier with absorptive fiberglass insulation to reduce both airborne and vibration-related transmission. The barrier layer blocks radiated sound, while the absorptive core minimizes resonance along duct and pipe surfaces. This dual-layer system provides measurable improvement in commercial sound reduction and overall building acoustic performance.

By treating duct and pipe connections directly, facilities prevent mechanical energy from spreading beyond the source, creating quieter environments and improving long-term occupant comfort.
