CHILLED WATER LINE NOISE

High-rise office buildings rely heavily on chilled water distribution systems operating at high flow rates. As water travels through pipes under pressure, turbulence and velocity changes excite pipe walls, resulting in radiated pipe noise and vibration transfer into adjacent workspaces.

In untreated office towers, background noise from chilled water lines often measures 58–65 dB(A) in perimeter offices and above suspended ceilings. For optimal productivity, office ambient noise levels should ideally remain within the 40–50 dB(A) range. Continuous exposure to elevated mechanical hum contributes to listening fatigue, decreased speech intelligibility, and reduced employee concentration.

Office noise reduction solutions and mechanical soundproofing systems

The problem arises because chilled water pipes lack the mass required to prevent airborne radiation. Standard lagging insulation addresses thermal performance but does not significantly improve acoustic pipe wrap performance. Without a dense barrier, pipes continue transmitting sound into ceiling plenums and partition walls.

The DuctaSil® B10LAG™ II Pipe & Duct Barrier System improves commercial pipe noise control by increasing pipe surface density and dampening vibration. The mass-loaded vinyl layer blocks airborne transmission, while the fiberglass decoupler reduces structure-borne energy transfer. Office installations frequently achieve 8–14 dB reductions, bringing background levels into the 45–50 dB(A) comfort zone. Integrating office noise reduction solutions and mechanical soundproofing systems improves overall workplace acoustics and supports productivity.
