Low-frequency mechanical rumble is one of the most challenging noise issues in healthcare environments. Unlike higher-frequency sounds, low-frequency energy travels farther, penetrates walls more easily, and is more noticeable during quiet nighttime hours. In hospitals and medical clinics, ductwork and piping running above ceilings or through vertical shafts can radiate this type of persistent background hum.
In untreated systems, mechanical rumble near patient rooms frequently measures between 55–63 dB(A) during active airflow cycles. While these levels may not seem extreme, recommended nighttime background levels for patient recovery environments are typically below 40–45 dB(A).
