NOISE NEAR PATIENT ROOMS

Low-frequency mechanical rumble is one of the most challenging noise issues in healthcare environments. Unlike higher-frequency sounds, low-frequency energy travels farther, penetrates walls more easily, and is more noticeable during quiet nighttime hours. In hospitals and medical clinics, ductwork and piping running above ceilings or through vertical shafts can radiate this type of persistent background hum.

In untreated systems, mechanical rumble near patient rooms frequently measures between 55–63 dB(A) during active airflow cycles. While these levels may not seem extreme, recommended nighttime background levels for patient recovery environments are typically below 40–45 dB(A). The difference between 60 dB and 45 dB is not minor — it represents a significant change in perceived loudness and comfort. Patients often describe the untreated condition as a constant hum that disrupts rest.

Low-frequency sound is difficult to control because lightweight duct walls lack the mass needed to block it. Standard fiberglass insulation focuses on thermal protection and does not meaningfully increase low-frequency sound transmission loss. As airflow turbulence excites the duct surface, the metal radiates sound directly into ceiling plenums and wall cavities.

The DuctaSil® B10LAG™ II Pipe & Duct Barrier System is specifically engineered to improve low-frequency noise control. Its high-density mass-loaded vinyl barrier significantly increases duct surface weight, reducing airborne transmission. The integrated quilted fiberglass decoupler further dampens vibration and minimizes structure-borne energy transfer. In healthcare applications, reductions of 12–20 dB are achievable, lowering rumble levels into the 40–48 dB(A) range. This shift restores a healthier acoustic condition that supports patient rest and recovery.
