PIPE NOISE IN GUEST ROOMS

In hospitality buildings, guest comfort is directly tied to acoustic performance. One of the most common but underestimated noise sources in hotels is pipe expansion and contraction noise caused by temperature cycling in hydronic heating and cooling systems. As water temperature fluctuates, pipes expand and contract against structural supports and penetrations, generating vibration and radiated sound.

During active heating or cooling cycles, untreated pipe systems commonly produce interior sound levels between 55–60 dB(A) in guest rooms. For sleep environments, recommended nighttime ambient levels should remain below 40–45 dB(A). Even intermittent spikes above 50 dB(A) can disturb sleep cycles and negatively impact guest satisfaction scores.

The issue is compounded because this condition involves both structure-borne vibration transmission and airborne pipe radiation. Standard fiberglass insulation primarily provides thermal protection and condensation control but does not meaningfully improve sound transmission loss (STL).
