PLUMBING PIPE NOISE

In multifamily construction, plumbing systems are a common source of occupant complaints. Domestic water supply lines and drain stacks generate turbulence during peak usage periods, producing plumbing noise transmission into adjacent units.

Untreated plumbing systems often produce interior levels of 60–68 dB(A) when toilets flush or showers operate. In residential environments, acceptable background noise levels typically remain below 45–50 dB(A). Persistent plumbing noise can disrupt sleep, reduce tenant satisfaction, and negatively impact lease renewals.

Because plumbing lines are frequently routed through shared wall cavities, untreated pipes create acoustic flanking paths. Standard pipe insulation does not meaningfully increase sound transmission loss or reduce airborne radiation.

The DuctaSil® B10LAG™ II Pipe & Duct Barrier System enhances residential acoustic pipe wrap performance by adding high-density mass and vibration damping. Reductions of 10–18 dB are common, lowering ambient levels into the 45–52 dB(A) range. Implementing targeted commercial noise control solutions and acoustic plumbing wrap systems significantly improves tenant comfort and reduces complaint frequency.
