GENERATOR SERVICE DOOR
NOISE LEAKAGE

Backup power generators are critical for hospitals, data centers, and commercial facilities, ensuring operations continue during electrical outages. However, these large diesel or natural gas generators produce extremely high sound levels during testing and operation. Inside generator rooms, sound levels frequently reach 90–100 dB(A), making effective noise containment essential.

Even when generator rooms are constructed with heavy walls and soundproofing materials, service doors often allow noise to escape. Doors typically lack the mass and acoustic absorption needed to stop low-frequency engine noise, allowing sound to travel into nearby hallways, control rooms, or office areas.

Daily generator testing programs can become disruptive for building occupants if noise leaks through these door openings. Employees may experience difficulty concentrating, and communication in adjacent rooms becomes challenging when generator noise exceeds 70 dB(A).

Installing a high-density acoustic door blanket such as the ImpactaCore® Acoustic Door Blanket System dramatically improves noise containment. The blanket acts as a soundproof door cover, blocking airborne sound waves and absorbing reflected noise energy.

With this industrial acoustic door blanket, facilities can significantly reduce generator noise escaping through doorways. In many cases, sound levels outside the generator room can drop from 95 dB(A) to approximately 60–65 dB(A), creating a more comfortable and OSHA-friendly environment for workers nearby.
