Electrical Substation Transformer Noise

Electrical substations are critical components of power distribution infrastructure, converting high-voltage electricity into usable energy for communities and industrial facilities. Transformers, switchgear equipment, and cooling systems operate continuously inside these substations and produce constant humming noise. Large electrical transformers commonly generate sound levels between 80–95 dB, particularly in high-capacity power distribution facilities. This noise can travel long distances and impact nearby buildings or residential areas.

Substation operators and maintenance technicians often work close to these electrical systems while performing inspections and equipment adjustments. When transformer noise spreads across the facility, workers may struggle to hear instructions or communication from other technicians. In outdoor substations located near urban areas, transformer noise can also create environmental noise concerns. Many utilities therefore install electrical substation noise barriers and transformer noise barrier walls.

Installing SilenCore® Metal Wall Panel Systems creates an effective acoustic metal barrier system around transformer equipment. These metal noise barrier wall panels are designed to contain low-frequency humming noise generated by large electrical systems. Their structural acoustic metal panels provide both sound absorption and sound blocking performance.

The panels function as exterior metal sound barrier walls that reduce noise transmission from transformer yards while allowing airflow and equipment access. Because the system is engineered as wind load rated acoustic barrier walls, it is suitable for long-term outdoor installations. These industrial acoustic metal panels help utilities meet environmental noise regulations and improve working conditions.

After installation, transformer noise can often be reduced by 15–30 dBA, lowering sound levels from 90–95 dB to approximately 65–75 dB in surrounding areas. This reduction significantly improves acoustic comfort for workers and nearby communities.
