Gymnasiums are large open spaces designed to accommodate sporting events, physical education classes, assemblies, and school activities. These environments often feature hardwood floors, concrete or brick walls, and tall ceilings supported by exposed steel structures. While these materials provide durability for athletic activities, they also create highly reflective acoustic environments. During sports practices or school assemblies, noise levels commonly reach 85–90 dB(A) due to bouncing balls, whistles, crowd cheering, and announcements over the sound system.
Because gymnasiums contain so many reflective surfaces, sound waves easily travel upward and bounce repeatedly off the ceiling. These reflections create long reverberation times that produce a noticeable echo throughout the space. As noise continues to reflect across the gym, voices and announcements become blurred, making it difficult for athletes, coaches, and spectators to clearly understand what is being said.
