Gymnasium facilities are large open spaces designed to accommodate sports activities, assemblies, and school events. These facilities typically feature hardwood floors, concrete walls, and very high ceilings supported by steel roof structures. While this architecture works well for athletic activities, it creates serious acoustic challenges. During sporting events, practice sessions, or school assemblies, sound levels in gymnasiums often reach 85–90 dB(A) due to crowd cheering, whistles, bouncing balls, and public announcements.
Because most gymnasium surfaces are hard and reflective, sound waves travel upward and bounce repeatedly off the ceiling. These reflections create long reverberation times that cause echo throughout the facility. As crowd noise builds, overlapping sound reflections make it difficult for players to hear coaches and for spectators to understand announcements over the sound system.
