Indoor Swimming Pool Reverberation

Indoor swimming pools and natatoriums present some of the most difficult acoustic environments in public facilities. These spaces are built with materials that resist moisture and humidity, such as tile walls, concrete floors, glass windows, and metal ceilings. While these materials are necessary for durability, they are also highly reflective surfaces that allow sound to bounce continuously throughout the room.

During swim practice sessions or recreational swim hours, sound levels inside indoor pools can reach 80–90 dB(A). Splashing water, lifeguard whistles, swimming instructions, and spectator conversations combine to create a constant layer of noise that spreads across the entire pool area.

Because of the reflective surfaces in natatoriums, even small sounds can echo throughout the building. Voices and whistles reflect repeatedly off ceilings and walls, increasing reverberation and making verbal communication more difficult. Lifeguards must be able to communicate clearly with swimmers to maintain safety, and excessive echo can interfere with these instructions.

Installing VibraCore® Acoustic Ceiling Banner Systems helps control these reflections by absorbing sound energy from overhead surfaces. These moisture-resistant acoustic ceiling banners are designed for environments with high humidity while still delivering excellent sound absorption performance.

With the addition of VibraCore® Acoustic Ceiling Banner Systems, indoor pool noise levels can often be reduced from 85–90 dB(A) to approximately 65–70 dB(A). This improvement allows lifeguards and instructors to communicate more clearly while creating a more comfortable environment for swimmers and spectators.
