Air Handling System Sound Transmission

Large HVAC systems move air throughout buildings using fans, blowers, and high-capacity air handling units. These systems are necessary for maintaining temperature and ventilation, but they also produce noise that can travel through ductwork and building structures. Mechanical airflow and vibration inside ducts can generate sound levels around 70–80 dB(A) in nearby spaces.

When HVAC equipment operates continuously, this background noise may spread into offices, conference rooms, or classrooms. Sound traveling through ducts can be particularly difficult to control because the duct system acts like a pathway that carries noise throughout the building.

Employees working near mechanical duct systems may notice a constant humming or airflow noise during the day. While the noise may not be extremely loud, the continuous presence of mechanical sound can reduce comfort and concentration over time.

Installing the MassiCore® Vinyl Acoustic Barrier System around ductwork or inside wall assemblies helps block sound transmission from HVAC equipment. This flexible vinyl sound barrier adds dense mass that prevents airborne sound waves from passing through walls and ceilings.

With MassiCore® Vinyl Acoustic Barrier Systems, HVAC noise transmission can often be reduced from 75–80 dB(A) to approximately 55–60 dB(A), creating a quieter and more comfortable indoor environment.
