Emergency Generator Yard Noise

Backup generators are critical for facilities such as hospitals, data centers, manufacturing plants, and commercial buildings that require reliable emergency power. During testing cycles or emergency operation, these generators can produce extremely loud engine noise. Depending on the generator size and load, sound levels may reach 90–100 dB(A) during operation. When these units are installed outdoors, the sound can easily travel across open spaces and reach nearby buildings.

The low-frequency noise produced by diesel generators is particularly difficult to control because it carries long distances through the air. Without any sound barrier, generator noise may spread into surrounding offices, residential buildings, or public spaces. Employees working near generator yards may hear the constant rumble of the engine during testing cycles, which can interfere with communication and concentration.

Generator testing is often required on a weekly or monthly basis to ensure emergency systems remain operational. During these scheduled tests, nearby occupants may experience loud bursts of engine noise that disrupt meetings, phone calls, or normal daily activities. In some cases, facilities may receive complaints from neighboring businesses or residents due to the repeated generator noise events.

Installing the MassiCore® Vinyl Fence Acoustic Barrier System around generator installations provides an effective way to contain this noise. This high-performance vinyl acoustic fence barrier surrounds the equipment with dense sound-blocking material that prevents airborne sound waves from spreading into surrounding areas. The barrier works by adding mass and redirecting sound energy upward rather than allowing it to travel outward.

With properly installed MassiCore® Vinyl Fence Acoustic Barrier System, generator noise reaching nearby spaces can often be reduced from 95–100 dB(A) to approximately 70–75 dB(A). This reduction significantly improves acoustic comfort for surrounding areas while allowing facilities to maintain reliable backup power systems.
