Semiconductor Fabrication Noise

Semiconductor fabrication facilities operate highly specialized equipment that must function continuously to maintain production output. Machines such as lithography systems, vacuum pumps, cooling units, and chemical processing tools often generate continuous background sound levels between 70–85 dB(A). While technicians working in fabrication environments are trained to operate within these conditions, the persistent mechanical sound can interfere with communication and concentration during precision manufacturing processes.

Technicians assembling or monitoring semiconductor wafers must maintain strict attention to detail. When background sound approaches 80–85 dB(A), conversations between technicians become difficult and instructions may need to be repeated. Over time, the combination of equipment noise and high production demands can lead to fatigue and reduced workflow efficiency. In environments where sound exposure reaches these levels, facilities must also consider OSHA workplace sound exposure guidelines to ensure safe working conditions.

Most semiconductor facilities prioritize contamination control and particle-free air quality through specialized cleanroom construction. However, these environments are not always designed with industrial acoustic control in mind. As a result, mechanical sound from pumps, compressors, and processing equipment spreads throughout the fabrication area and contributes to elevated ambient sound levels.

Santrix® Acoustic Modular Cleanrooms provide an advanced solution that combines cleanroom contamination control with acoustic sound isolation. These modular enclosures use insulated acoustic wall panels to significantly reduce external sound transmission while maintaining ISO-rated cleanroom airflow standards. In fabrication environments where equipment produces 80–85 dB(A), interior sound levels inside a Santrix® Acoustic Modular Cleanrooms enclosure can often be reduced to approximately 45–50 dB(A). This quieter environment allows technicians to focus on precision fabrication tasks while maintaining the strict environmental conditions required for semiconductor manufacturing.
