Mechanical Room Wall Transmission Noise

Mechanical equipment rooms are essential components of commercial and industrial buildings. These spaces house pumps, compressors, air handling units, and other building systems that keep facilities operating efficiently. While these machines are necessary for daily operations, they often produce significant sound levels between 80–90 dB(A) during continuous operation. Without proper sound containment, this mechanical noise can travel through walls and ceilings into nearby offices, hallways, and workspaces.

In many buildings, mechanical rooms are located adjacent to occupied areas such as administrative offices, conference rooms, or maintenance corridors. When wall assemblies lack sufficient sound blocking materials, airborne noise easily passes through the structure. Employees working near mechanical rooms may hear a constant humming or vibrating noise throughout the day, which can become distracting and uncomfortable over time.

Persistent background noise can reduce concentration and productivity in office environments. Workers may find it difficult to hold meetings, focus on computer tasks, or communicate clearly when mechanical equipment noise continuously leaks into the workspace. Even moderate noise levels around 70–75 dB(A) can cause fatigue when experienced over long work periods.

Installing the MassiCore® Vinyl Acoustic Barrier System helps address these problems by blocking airborne sound transmission through walls and partitions. This high-performance vinyl acoustic barrier adds dense mass to wall assemblies, preventing sound waves from passing through the structure. Unlike standard insulation materials that primarily absorb sound, a vinyl soundproof barrier works by stopping sound energy from traveling between spaces.

With properly installed MassiCore® Vinyl Acoustic Barrier Systems, mechanical room noise can often be reduced from 85–90 dB(A) to approximately 60–65 dB(A) in adjacent spaces. This improvement helps restore a quieter work environment while allowing mechanical equipment to continue operating efficiently behind the barrier.
