Overwiew

 

Valencia College required enhanced acoustic ceiling tiles for noise control across classrooms, lecture halls, administrative offices, and faculty spaces. As enrollment increased and campus activity expanded, speech transmission between classrooms and corridor noise began affecting instructional clarity and student focus.
To strengthen overhead sound control without altering visible ceiling finishes, Valencia College implemented the All Noise Control’s MassiCore® Acoustic Ceiling Barrier (ANC-CB22),
engineered to deliver reliable acoustic ceiling barrier
performance within suspended acoustic ceilings.

 

CHALLENGE

Lightweight drop ceiling assemblies allowed hallway
conversations and activity noise to travel through shared ceiling plenums into adjacent classrooms. Footstep impact from upper levels and mechanical system sounds further increased background noise, affecting speech clarity during lectures and instruction.Valencia College required a high-performance ceiling barrier system that could increase floor-to-floor transmission loss within the plenum space. The solution needed to strengthen sound
isolation while maintaining fire code compliance, preserving
access to lighting and mechanical systems, and integrating seamlessly into the existing suspended acoustic ceilings for long-term performance in a high-traffic educational environment.

SOLUTION

MassiCore® ANC-CB22 Acoustic Ceiling Barriers were installed by All Noise Control above the existing drop ceiling grid systems throughout classrooms, lecture halls, and administrative offices.Each composite panel consists of dual 1” fiberglass layers
surrounding a 1 lb PSF mass loaded vinyl core, forming a 2-inch thick assembly with an STC rating of 27.

Ceiling barriers are designed to block noise from transferring from office to office and from room to room by adding mass within the ceiling plenum. By increasing cavity density, the MassiCore® system reduces airborne sound migration between adjacent spaces and strengthens overall ceiling transmission loss
performance.

Panels were precision die-cut to standard 2’ x 2’ and 2’ x 4’ grid dimensions and placed directly above existing tiles, allowing for efficient installation without disrupting academic schedules. The
system complies with ASTM E-90 and ASTM E-413 standards for sound transmission and carries a Class A fire rating to meet educational facility requirements.
