Overwiew

Florida International University (FIU) operates a diverse range
of classrooms and lecture halls designed to support large
student populations and varied teaching formats. Many of
these spaces feature high ceilings, hard wall surfaces, and
dense seating arrangements that contribute to excessive
reverberation and reduced speech intelligibility.

To improve the learning conditions and ensure clear
communication between instructors and students, FIU

partnered with All Noise Control to install VibraCore® ANC-
4000 acoustical ceiling panels, a proven solution for

educational environments like Florida International University.

 

CHALLENGE

Lecture halls experienced long reverberation times, causing
spoken instruction to become unclear—particularly for
students seated farther from the lecturer. Background noise
from HVAC systems, hallway activity, and adjacent rooms
further degraded acoustic performance. The university
required acoustic ceiling panels compatible with existing grid
systems, offering high sound absorption, fire safety
compliance, and minimal disruption during installation.

SOLUTION

 

All Noise Control designed and installed a customized system
of VibraCore® ANC-4000 acoustical ceiling panels to meet the
acoustic and architectural needs of Florida International
University’s classrooms and lecture halls. Lay-in acoustic ceiling

panels were installed within existing ceiling grids, while direct-
mounted acoustic ceiling panels were used in larger lecture

spaces to address higher reverberation levels.

The sound absorbing ceiling panels feature a 6–7 PCF rigid
fiberglass core with acoustically transparent fabric finishes for
high-performance sound absorption. Panel thicknesses of 1”
and 2” were selected to deliver high NRC-rated acoustic ceiling
panels, providing effective noise reduction ceiling panel
performance while maintaining ceiling height, lighting, and
HVAC airflow. Panels were engineered using reflected ceiling
plans, and installation was completed in phases to minimize
disruption and align with academic schedules, resulting in a
durable ceiling soundproofing panel solution for active
educational environments.
