INDOOR ACOUSTICAL BLANKET ENCLOSURE FOR ELECTRICAL TESTING & POWER DISTRIBUTION EQUIPMENT

GE Industrial Solutions operates a large electrical testing and
power distribution facility in Tampa, FL. The site houses

switchgear, load centers, variable-frequency drives, and high-
capacity testing equipment. These systems generate a

persistent combination of electrical hum, transformer
vibration, and cooling fan noise ranging from 80–95 dB during
peak operation.

THE NOISE CHALLENGE:

Engineers and technicians conducted diagnostics, assembly,
and calibration in close proximity to the equipment. GE
needed a solution that would:

  • Reduce noise exposure around electrical test bays
  • Improve communication between technicians
  • Minimize fatigue during long testing cycles
  • Avoid obstructing ventilation for heat-sensitive electrical
    units
  • Maintain full walk-in access for troubleshooting and daily
    operations

Conventional wall absorption provided little impact because
most of the noise was generated directly at the equipment.
GE required a source-based solution that enclosed the noise
while remaining completely removable and compliant with
electrical safety access requirements.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

We engineered a custom indoor acoustical blanket enclosure
surrounding two power-distribution test stations. The enclosure
used flexible, industrial-grade acoustic blankets hung from a
modular steel frame system. This isolated the noise directly at the source while preserving airflow and access to critical electrical
components.

KEY FEATURES INSTALLED

Because the environment involved electrical equipment that
required constant cooling and uninterrupted access, the acoustic
blanket system was designed with flexible, removable sections and fire-resistant materials suitable for indoor industrial use.

AB12 Acoustic Blankets – Provided high-performance
absorption of electrical hum, fan noise, and mid-frequency
mechanical sound.

AB220 Acoustic Blankets – Added mass-loaded sound blocking
to contain low-frequency transformer vibration.

Modular Support Framing – Allowed the enclosure to be shaped
around switchgear without interfering with conduit runs or
equipment doors.

RESULTS

The acoustical blanket enclosure provided significant noise
reduction while maintaining operational efficiency, safety
compliance, and full accessibility for GE’s engineering team.

  • Achieved 24–30 dB noise reduction at technician workstations.
  • Reduced fatigue and improved communication during testing and diagnostics.
  • Maintained proper ventilation for sensitive electrical components.
  • Enhanced overall acoustic comfort without requiring structural modification.
  • Delivered a flexible system that GE can relocate or reconfigure as equipment layouts evolve.
