Overwiew

ExxonMobil operates large-scale refinery facilities where
compressors, pumps, generators, and mechanical systems run
continuously to support production and processing operations.
These mission-critical environments require strict safety
compliance, controlled acoustic performance, and long-term
durability under harsh outdoor conditions including wind,
moisture, and temperature fluctuations.

Elevated industrial noise levels within equipment zones and

surrounding operational areas created the need for a high-
performance refinery soundproofing solution. To mitigate

equipment noise while maintaining accessibility and
ventilation, ExxonMobil partnered with All Noise Control to
implement a customized Modular Metal Enclosure System
engineered for industrial refinery soundproofing.

CHALLENGE

Refinery equipment generates significant broadband and low-
frequency noise, particularly from generators, compressors,

and pump systems operating continuously under heavy load.
Excessive sound levels can travel across operational zones,
contributing to worker fatigue, communication difficulties, and
OSHA-aligned compliance concerns. The enclosure system
needed to provide substantial transmission loss while
remaining suitable for outdoor refinery environments subject
to wind and weather loading.

SOLUTION

All Noise Control designed and installed a customized Modular
Metal Enclosure system utilizing double-walled acoustic panels
with a high-mass septum core to deliver enhanced sound
absorption and transmission loss. Each enclosure panel
featured a solid outer steel shell for structural strength and
environmental protection, paired with an inner perforated liner
to reduce internal reverberation and improve acoustic
performance.

The enclosure framework was engineered to meet outdoor
wind and snow loading requirements, while access doors and
removable service panels ensured safe and efficient
equipment maintenance.

RESULTS

  • Achieved typical noise reductions of 20–35 dBA
  • Reduced generator, compressor, and pump noise
    transmission to adjacent work areas
  • Supported OSHA-aligned industrial noise management
    goals
  • Maintained proper ventilation and thermal performance
  • Provided a modular, serviceable system for long-term
    operational efficiency
