Mezzanine Installed on Greenland’s Ice Sheet

Challenge

Situated near the apex of the Greenland ice sheet, the National Science Foundation’s Greenland Summit Station required a warehouse mezzanine to support utility equipment and an office for the Station. The site sits at an elevation of 10,600 feet above sea level, where wind speeds have been recorded exceeding 100 mph and temperatures range from approximately 30°F to -76°F. Due to the unique and remote location, where resources are scarce and the ability to address issues is limited, any design or fit problems could result in significant cost and schedule delays.

Solution

CH2M Polar Services (CPS) contracted All Noise Control to design and supply the mezzanine for installation at the site. To ensure a smooth process, CPS and All Noise Control conducted a test-build of the mezzanine at All Noise Control’s facility in Blairsville, GA, before shipping it to the field. The mezzanine was then transported to Scotia, NY, where it was flown to Summit Station, Greenland, via LC-130 aircraft by the 109th New York Air National Guard. CPS successfully installed the mezzanine in an insulated warehouse, staying on track with the project’s schedule.

All Noise Control Delivers

The steel mezzanine measures 14’ x 29’ x 8’ with a 125 pounds per square foot rating. It comes fully equipped with an IBC-certified stair system and a 48” x 48” landing on top.
